Women Working It Out!

Duplicate Content

Posted by aegb on February 17, 2008

I am adding this a little earlier on than I’d anticipated but its is a huge crime on the net and greatly damaging and whilst there may not be a lot that you can do to prevent it happening to you, if you know the damage it can cause you will know not to do it.

Stealing content from other websites is bad! Loads of people do it though – the damage it does can be impossible to repair.

Hmmm how do i explain it in easy terms? Ok, when you add information on the Internet, i will use a website as an example or even this blog – if i said my blog has only been live a few hours and some of its content has been taken already :-O Anyway, the search engine bots/crawlers/spiders ( will chat about these later on) enter your site and grab bits of the information. This information is then used in the search engines as an aid to exposing your site to the public.

So, i want to sell a packet of crisps on the Internet and i write a load of info. about the crisps in the hope that a search engine spider will grab that information and add it to Google , yahoo or whatever engine. IF someone steals the information and Google or Yahoo trawls through the other site and grabs MY information, when it gets to my site, it thinks that it already has that information and it either ignores it, in which case my packet of crisps will never make it to the search engine OR that info is thrown into something called “Google Hell”( Supplemental results) which is hard to get out of. Now, it could be that the site who has stolen the information is damaged so its a real risk for either website to be honest.

You can find more information by doing a Google search. Will chat in more depth about this later on. I can’t believe that my wok has been taken already – please ask me if you want to take my work.

Some Legal Stuff You Might Need To Know

Posted by aegb on February 16, 2008

I am shocked at the amount of websites on the net who don’t display an address – would you send money to a company who don’t display an address? Of course there is nothing to say that that business is actually at that address but in order to satisfy the department of trade and industry, an address is required, even if it is a home address.

Most people probably don’t even think to check if there is an address on a website but if you think about the millions and millions of websites on the Internet, so many are trading illegally in some way. Ebay is a trading standards nightmare and so owning a trustworthy website is important if you want to make the business work.

There are some hand made products that may require a license, products like hand made soap or any toiletry that involves you adding together two or more ingredients may need a licence, these are not hard to get and are well worth it.

Any product that requires weighing or measuring needs trading standards scales and measures, expensive bits of equipment but crucial in order to stay within the law.

Trading standards may be scary people but they are also very good people to learn from.

If you intend having a website built by a designer, don’t rely on them advising you on the legal stuff you need on your site, there are lots of cheap web people about who simply aren’t offering the full service. The distance selling rules need to be stated on your website, again Trading Standards can help with these details and i know it is a million pages long but the DTI website is well worth looking at.

Insurance: This is a huge expense for a new business, there are specialist insurance policies for work at home people, the AA does a decent one and taking insurance is something that you need to think hard about. Many business’ don’t have any insurance, it is down to you to decide what sort of risks your products might pose and how much stock you have and what the consequences to your business would be if something damaged your stock. Just a consideration.

You may find that some insurers will not insure you if you ship to the USA or Canada from the UK, you may also want to consider adding some disclaimers to your website.

So, nothing major but just a few things to look at and consider before you start your business.

HTML codes

Posted by aegb on February 16, 2008

I am so bad, i know that i need to go away and find my list of codes and start as i mean to go on but i so dislike html – anyone not know what i am talking about? Hmmm me neither but its one of the things i have had to learn about in order to function on the net – i will try to get someone to give me a hand and add a page on various html codes somewhere on the blog – it was one of the things i had problems finding as i went along.

Watch out for that info!

What Sort Of Business?

Posted by aegb on February 16, 2008

One of the biggest hurdles when considering starting an online business is what sort of business. There are many many tallented women making money from making their own products so any sort of craft can generate a great deal of revenue.  Most people love hand crafted goods and so hand made soap,  jewellery, cards, knitted items, baby items, children’s clothes and actually anything hand crafted will do well on the internet if marketed correctly.

A lovely little site i know www.tuggle.co.uk is a wonderful place to start selling your own products, this can be as far as you want your business to go or it can be as well as an online store. Many women are doing well on ebay but it isn’t a place that suits everyone.

There is no saying what business is going to do best on the internet, there are so many facets that make up a good business. My own business was started from a passion and is based on something that i know quite a lot about.

Look at what you are good at? There seems to be room for almost every skill on the internet, it doesn’t have to involve sales, services are also sought after on the net.

There are the ready made business’, I saw a website a few days ago where an Avon distributor had set up her own site and was selling other bits and bats on there. Usbourne books seems to be popular, quite hard work but lots of business’ incorporate some sort of book club into their site as a side line.

Information can often make money, i prefer to give it away for free but there are many selling e books and making some income.

There is something for everyone, it just needs a bit of consideration beforehand and a little bit of legal know how which i will come to later on.

Why the Net?

Posted by aegb on February 16, 2008

Why are more and more women wanting to set up on-line business? Well because they can! But also because it is an avenue that allows mothers with young children the ability to work and stay at home with their children at the same time.

This won’t apply to all women but many of us abandoned our career to have our children, after a year or two the skills that we once had to feel confident within the workplace starts to deteriorate. I know many women who went onto have more and more children just so that they didn’t have to go back to work.

More and more women are now forced to go back to work after the birth of their babies and juggle work and family life, there is no wonder more and more women are taking advantage of setting up their own business on the internet. Some women will know exactly what they need to do to make that business work, others won’t have a clue – if this is you, then hopefully you will find this blog just the bit of information that you need.

New to this?

Posted by aegb on February 16, 2008

You know what? I am new to this, i have blogged before but not with WordPress and so this is all new to me, forgive me for any errors – oh and i need to mention that my spelling is chronic – you will come to love my spelling errors ;-) and wonder why the Oxford English Dictionary didn’t adopt my way of spelling. Anyway, as i was saying, being new to something can sometimes be daunting, you just gotta learn how to do it as you go along, make mistakes and learn from them – been there done that and got the T shirt – starting a net business is like that but i hope to make it just that bit easier for some of you.
